Seminal British painter David Hockney has died at age 88. Hockney, whose colorful works include Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures), The Splash, and My Parents, died at his home in London on Thursday, just a few weeks short of his 89th birthday. In a statement, publicist Erica Bolton described the painter as one of the “most important figures in contemporary art in both the 20th and 21st centuries.” In a career spanning seven decades, Hockney was a key figure in the pop art movement and later moved into other forms, such as photography and digital art. In 2018, his Pool with Two Figures work sold at Christie’s auction house in New York City for $90 million, breaking a record for the most expensive artwork by a living artist. The record stood for just a few months until Jeff Koons’ Rabbit sculpture sold for more than $91 million in May 2019. Born in Bradford, northern England, Hockney’s work also depicts scenes from his adopted homes in California and London. He was also a lifelong smoker, who campaigned against the imposition of restrictions on tobacco. “I’ve smoked for 62 years, so why stop now?” he told an interviewer. “Picasso smoked, died at 91. Matisse smoked, died at 84. Monet smoked, died at 86. Van Gogh smoked a pipe, and he died early, but not from smoking.”

A Turkish Airlines plane carrying 267 people crashed into a ground radar antenna while taxiing at Antalya Airport in Turkey on Friday. The Boeing 777 aircraft, operating Flight TK2430 from Istanbul, reportedly hit the metal radar structure with one of its wings. The antenna then collapsed onto the side of the plane, leaving a large hole and significant damage to the aircraft. The collision was powerful enough to trigger oxygen masks to drop from the ceiling and force overhead luggage bins open. Passengers described hearing a “frightening” bang when the impact occurred. Firefighters and paramedics responded to the scene while travelers evacuated via aircraft stairs. Turkish Airlines said all 267 passengers were safely removed from the plane. One passenger sustained minor injuries and was later reported to be in good condition. A technical investigation into the incident has been launched.

Denver Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper, 28, was arrested for a second time this month on Thursday night after police say he violated a protection order connected to an ongoing domestic violence case. The latest arrest comes just days after prosecutors added a felony assault charge to allegations stemming from a June 4 altercation with his longtime girlfriend, Jade Fiegen. According to court and jail records, Cooper was booked into the Douglas County Jail in Colorado on charges including violation of a protection order and harassment through repeated telephone calls. Authorities allege Cooper sent multiple messages, made phone calls, and went to his girlfriend’s apartment despite a court order barring contact. She reportedly called 911 after he arrived at her residence. The protection order was issued after prosecutors upgraded charges related to Cooper’s June 4 arrest, adding felony second-degree assault by strangulation and misdemeanor third-degree assault. The case stems from an argument between Cooper and his girlfriend over allegations of infidelity. Last weekend, Cooper appeared to address the situation on Instagram, posting a Bible verse about anger alongside an apology. “I apologize to my family and my friends and my community... And so many others,” he wrote. A Delta Air Lines flight was forced to divert after an unusual odor was reported in the cockpit. Delta Air Lines Flight 337 departed from Orlando and was headed to Detroit Metro Airport but was diverted to Charlotte, North Carolina, on Thursday after the crew declared an emergency. “Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people, and we apologize for their experience and delay in travel,” Delta said in a statement to CBS News. There were 187 passengers on board, and a spokesperson said they were being accommodated overnight with hotel and meal vouchers, and that the flight to Detroit was scheduled to depart on Friday. The cause of the odor, and what it was, remains unknown. The Thursday incident marks the second such case in recent months, after another Delta flight bound for Seattle made an emergency landing in the Bay Area in April due to a strange smell in the cabin. In December last year, two similar incidents involving unusual odors on the airline were also reported. The Daily Beast has reached out to Delta Air Lines for comment.

The first-ever footage of a Goblin shark has been obtained by Australian scientists, and the species is making history for its rarity and ugliness. “Not even their mother would love their faces,” Professor Colum Brown of Macquarie University said. During two ventures, one to the Tonga Trench in 2024 and one near Jarvis Island, scientists recorded over 50 days of footage, leading to the approximately 20-second clip of the mysterious creature published in the Journal of Fish Biology. “They’ve captured the imagination of so many people, but we’ve never really seen them alive,” Professor Alan Jamieson, director of the Minderoo-UWA Deep-Sea Research Center, said. “We actually know virtually nothing about them.” Jamieson, a co-author of the paper, is particularly drawn to the animal’s rare and rather unpleasant appearance. “They have this incredible mouth that kind of protrudes down from the head, and does a kind of slingshot feeding thing.” The recordings of the animal expanded the species’ known geographical range to the Central Pacific and constitute the deepest-known record of a white shark.
