LPD warns against leaving packages out to deter ‘porch pirates’

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - The Laredo Police Department is warning residents that large, visible holiday boxes can attract package thieves.

Police say reducing package visibility can help reduce the risk of burglary as “porch pirates” target unattended packages during the holiday season.

“What we highly recommend is that you either cut up the boxes to put them into the recycling can. It’s a little more laborious to do that, but at the same time, it’s a little bit safer that way,” said Joe Baeza with the Laredo Police Department. “If something is way too big and you can’t do it that way, you should also maybe wait until the actual day of the recycling, when it’s going to come and get picked up, and you can walk it out then.”

Collection will be picked up on Saturday, December 27.
