Capital One Venture X vs. Citi Strata Elite: Which premium card is a better fit?

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card and Citi Strata Elite℠ Card are premium credit cards for frequent travelers seeking lounge access. Both offer this, plus extra points on travel expenses and statement credits that can more than cover each card's annual fee.
Yet, one of these travel credit cards makes you work a little harder to extract maximum value — and it could be well worth your time.
CNBC Select covers the annual fees, welcome bonuses, rewards, benefits and more of the Capital One Venture X vs. Citi Strata Elite.
Capital One Venture X vs. Citi Strata Elite
Annual fee
The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card has a $395 annual fee — one of the lowest for a premium card that offers airport lounge access. The Citi Strata Elite carries a $595 annual fee and offers several ways to recoup the cost, namely through statement credits and enhanced points-earning opportunities.
Overall, the Venture X wins in this category thanks to its lower annual fee and the card's annual statement credit that covers the lion's share of the yearly cost.
Winner: Capital One Venture X
Welcome bonus
For a limited time, the Venture X is offering a 100,000-mile bonus once you spend $10,000 on purchases in the first six months from account opening.
With the Citi Strata Elite, you can also earn a limited-time bonus of 100,000 points, but after spending $6,000 in the first three months of account opening.
The Venture X has a higher spending requirement, but it gives you a full six months to meet it. The Citi Strata Elite's bonus has a smaller spending requirement with less time to meet it, but it could be easier if you have a big purchase planned. The winner here depends on your personal anticipated spending.
Winner: Tie
Rewards
Both cards are geared toward travelers, and the rewards spending categories reflect that.
With the Capital One Venture X, you'll earn:
- 2X miles on all eligible purchases
- 5X miles on flights and vacation rentals booked through Capital One Travel
- 10X miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel
It's a simple rewards structure with a high base rate.
Compare that with the Citi Strata Elite, which earns:
- 12X points on hotels, car rentals and attractions booked on cititravel.com
- 6X points on air travel booked on cititravel.com
- 6X points at restaurants on Citi Nights℠ purchases, every Friday and Saturday, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. ET; earn 3X points any other time
- 1.5X points on all other purchases
You can earn more points overall with the Citi Strata Elite, but you'll need to commit to booking all your travel through Citi to earn the best rates. The exception is restaurant purchases, where you'll earn 3X points most of the time and 6X points during certain hours on Friday and Saturday nights.
The same is true with the Venture X: You earn the most by booking travel through Capital One. But the base rate of 2X miles on all purchases is more than Citi earns on non-bonus purchases.
With either card, you're beholden to the issuer's travel booking portal. When you book hotels this way, you usually won't earn elite status credit, have your elite status recognized or earn points with the hotel's loyalty program because they're considered third-party bookings.
Also, keep in mind that if your flight gets delayed or canceled, you'll need to call the travel portal for assistance, not the airline. If you do call the airline for help, they'll typically direct you back to the site or service you booked through.
If you're a frequent traveler, you probably want to earn elite status with your preferred hotel chain and receive assistance directly from airlines if needed, which both cards require you to give up to earn the best bonus rates. The Venture X's stronger base rewards rate gives it an edge, especially if you don't want to fully rely on issue portals or won't take full advantage of the Strata Elite's added bonus categories.
Winner: Capital One Venture X
Redemption options
Both cards allow you to redeem points for travel, statement credits and gift cards — although this is usually not the best way to spend them. Instead, the focus turns to travel transfer partners. With both cards, you get access to these partners at a 1:1 ratio unless noted otherwise:
Capital One vs. Citi Transfer Partners
| Capital One transfer partners | Citi transfer partners |
|---|---|
| Aeromexico Rewards | American Airlines AAdvantage® |
| Air Canada Aeroplan | Aeromexico Rewards |
| Air France-KLM Flying Blue | Air France-KLM Flying Blue |
| ALL Accor Live Limitless (2:1) | ALL Accor Live Limitless (2:1) |
| Avianca Lifemiles | Avianca Lifemiles |
| British Airways Executive Club | Cathay Pacific Asia Miles |
| Cathay Pacific Asia Miles | Choice Privileges (1:2) |
| Choice Privileges | Emirate Skywards |
| Emirates Skywards | Etihad Guest |
| Etihad Guest | EVA Air Infinity MileageLands |
| EVA Air Infinity MileageLands (1,000:750) | JetBlue TrueBlue |
| Finnair Plus | Leaders Club (1,000:200) |
| Preferred Hotels & Resorts I Prefer (1:2) | Preferred Hotels & Resorts I Prefer (1:4) |

| Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer | Thai Royal Orchard Plus |
| TAP Miles&Go | Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles |
| Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles | Virgin Atlantic Flying Club |
| Virgin Atlantic Flying Club | Wyndham Rewards |
| Wyndham Rewards |
For the most part, the cards' airline partners have a 1:1 ratio, with some overlap, although there are a few exceptions that favor Citi. You'll get a better transfer ratio with JetBlue, for example, as well as access to American Airlines AAdvantage, which only partners with Citi. You also get more points when you transfer to Choice or Preferred Hotels & Resorts.
That said, you can do well with Capital One's set of transfer partners; Air Canada, Avianca, Flying Blue and Qantas are all strong programs with interesting sweet spots.
Better transfer ratios and the American AAdvantage program give Citi a slight edge over Capital One, although you can book worldwide award travel quite easily with either program.
Winner: Citi Strata Elite
Benefits
Both cards have high annual fees with plenty of perks to back them up. The main features are airport lounge and expedited security access, and there's plenty more on offer.
Lounge access
A Priority Pass Select membership is included with the Capital One Venture X and Citi Strata Elite cards, meaning you can relax in a comfy chair with a complimentary drink away from the chaos at the gate.
With the Venture X, lounge visits for the cardholder are free, but guests must pay $35 each per visit starting February 2026. Until then, guests are free. With the Citi Strata Elite, you may have two guests per visit, and each additional guest will cost $35.
Each card provides special access, too. The Venture X allows cardholders to enjoy Capital One Lounges and Landings, which are top-tier lounges and restaurants with curated food and beverage offerings at a handful of airports. Starting in February 2026, each guest will cost $45 per visit, with a $25 fee for guests under 18 and no charge for children under two. If you spend $75,000 on your card within a calendar year, guests are free.
The Citi Strata Elite includes four Admirals Club passes to American Airlines lounges when flying American or another oneworld airline on the same day. Each adult may bring up to three children with them. Once the passes are redeemed, you won't get more until the following year. It's ideal for occasional visits or for treating your group to a lounge visit.
Statement credits
Both cards have statement credits to help offset their annual fee.
The Capital One Venture X includes a couple of straightforward credits:
- Up to $300 back in statement credits each year for bookings made through Capital One Travel
- Up to $120 statement credit for either Global Entry or TSA PreCheck® application fees
The Citi Strata Elite has a few more:
- $300 annual hotel benefit: Get up to $300 off a hotel stay of two nights or more booked through Citi Travel each calendar year
- $200 annual Splurge credit: Every calendar year, earn up to $200 in statement credits from your choice of up to two of the following brands: 1stDibs, American Airlines, Best Buy, Future Personal Training and Live Nation, with the option to change your selection at any time
- $200 annual Blacklane credit: Enjoy up to $200 in statement credits every calendar year when booking with Blacklane (up to $100 from January through June and up to $100 from July through December)
- Global Entry or TSA PreCheck® credit: Get a statement credit of up to $120 every four years as reimbursement for your Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee
The Strata Elite's credits, in particular, are only as useful as the value you assign to them. If you have to go out of your way to use them, or these services aren't available where you live, it could be a wash. But if you already shop at these merchants and can use the credits, the card could fit with your natural spending habits.
Additional perks
As premium credit cards, both the Venture X and Citi Strata Elite offer a range of additional built-in benefits.
Extra perks offered by the Capital One Venture X include:
- A 10,000-mile bonus on each account anniversary, starting on your first card anniversary
- Access to the Capital One Travel portal, which includes benefits such as opt-in travel insurance, price drop protection, price alerts and price match guarantee
- Access to in-person events through the Capital One Entertainment program, such as dining and sports events
- Complimentary Hertz President Circle* status for primary cardholders, authorized users and account managers
- Complimentary cell phone insurance, up to $800 in coverage (terms, conditions and exclusions apply)
The 10,000-mile anniversary bonus is worth at least $100 toward travel, and potentially more if you transfer to a travel partner.
With the Citi Strata Elite, you'll get:
- The Reserve by Citi Travel: Enjoy exclusive access to a collection of 4.5- to 5-star hotels
- Travel and shopping protections: Perks include trip delay protection, enhanced trip cancellation and trip interruption protection, plus lost or damaged luggage protection, MasterRental coverage, extended warranty and purchase assurance plus
- Mastercard World Legend benefits: This is the newest premium tier to the Mastercard Collection, offering priority reservations at restaurants, including in Europe through Mastercard's partnership with TheFork, ticketing access and more
When it comes to benefits, the Venture X's extra perks only add to the card's value — whereas with the Citi Strata Elite, you need to make sure you'll use them to get your money's worth. The biggest downside is the Venture X's guest policy for lounge access, but at least Capital One Lounge and Landings access is unlimited for the cardholder. You only get four Admirals Club passes annually with the Citi Strata Elite.
Winner: Capital One Venture X
*Upon enrollment, accessible through the Capital One website or mobile app, eligible cardholders will remain at that status level through the duration of the offer. Please note, enrolling through the normal Hertz Gold Plus Rewards enrollment process (e.g. at Hertz.com) will not automatically detect a cardholder as being eligible for the program and cardholders will not be automatically upgraded to the applicable status tier. Additional terms apply
Which should you get?
The Citi Strata Elite has a higher annual fee but offers higher earning power in bonus categories, more statement credits and more generous lounge access than the Capital One Venture X.
However, Venture X has a lower annual fee and is more straightforward. If you simply use the annual travel credit and wait to receive your 10,000 anniversary bonus points, the card basically pays for itself. Plus, the base rewards rate is a bit higher than the Citi Strata Elite's.
So which is best? For most people, it's the Venture X. But if you don't mind booking travel through Citi and tracking statement credits — or if you want lounge access with free visits for guests — the Citi Strata Elite becomes the better option.
FAQs
Which card is better, Citi or Capital One?
Capital One wins for ease of use for most travelers, but Citi has better transfer partners and more earning potential (with a higher annual fee for its premium card). Go with Capital One for simplicity or Citi for maximum value, if the benefits make sense for you.
What are the downsides of the Capital One Venture X?
Aside from the annual fee, which some might consider high, the lounge access isn't what it used to be. You'll need to either pay for your guests or spend $75,000 on your Venture X card within a calendar year to unlock free guest benefits. Plus, there's a fee for authorized users who want lounge access, so you'll need to work to extract the value for lounge access. The other negative is you must book your travel through Capital One to earn the annual statement credit, which some people won't like, but others may find manageable.
