BEMIDJI — Sanford Health recently reported a significant and rapid increase in Influenza A activity in the Bemidji area, signaling the arrival of flu season as the holidays approach.
In just one week, influenza test positivity rates in the Bemidji region jumped from 2.47% to 22.5%. Most patients testing positive are younger individuals who are unvaccinated, according to data collected by Sanford Health.
“We typically expect flu activity to increase this time of year, but the speed and size of this jump is concerning,” Dr. Daniel Hoody, chief medical officer for Sanford Bemidji, said in a release. “Based on current trends, we anticipate flu cases will continue to rise in the coming weeks. If you have not yet received your flu vaccine, now is the time to get it.”
Sanford Health closely monitors influenza activity across its facilities. Visitor restrictions are implemented once influenza positivity rates reach 30% to help protect patients, visitors and staff. The Bemidji region is currently approaching that threshold.
Health experts encourage community members to take preventive steps now, including receiving an annual flu vaccine, washing hands frequently, staying home when sick and avoiding close contact with others when experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough or body aches.
Flu vaccinations are available by appointment and on a walk-in basis in the family medicine department at the Sanford Bemidji Main Clinic. Pediatric flu vaccinations are also available on a walk-in and appointment basis at the Sanford Bemidji 1611 Anne St. clinic.
"Flu vaccination remains the most effective way to reduce the risk of severe illness, hospitalization and spread within the community, particularly for young children, older adults and those with chronic health conditions," the release said.
