Trump administration orders CenterPoint plant to keep burning coal in Newburgh

NEWBURGH, Ind. (WFIE) - U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright has issued emergency orders to keep two Indiana coal plants operational, one of which is right here in the Tri-state.

The Trump Administration says this order will help guarantee people living in the Midwest have access to affordable and reliable electricity heading into the winter months.

Officials say the order also directs CenterPoint Energy and two other utility companies to keep burning coal at the R.M. Schahfer station, and the F.B. Culley station in Newburgh.

They say certain units at the coal plants were originally scheduled to close at the end of the year.

“The Trump Administration remains committed to swiftly deploying all available tools and authorities to safeguard the reliability, affordability, and security of the nation’s energy system,” said Secretary Wright. “Keeping these coal plants online has the potential to save lives and is just common sense. Americans deserve reliable power regardless of whether the wind is blowing or the sun is shining during extreme winter conditions.”

The orders have already begun and will continue until March 23, 2026.
